Frequently asked questions

Tax preparation and planning questions

What should I bring to a tax-preparation appointment?

Bring current-year income documents, prior-year returns if we did not prepare them, estimated-tax payment records, business income and expense reports, and documents supporting deductions, credits, investments, property transactions, and foreign activity that may apply.

What is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning?

Tax preparation reports transactions that already occurred. Tax planning looks ahead at income, withholding, estimated payments, entity structure, retirement contributions, purchases, and other decisions while there may still be time to act.

Does every small-business owner need to make quarterly estimated payments?

No. The requirement depends on expected tax, withholding, credits, and prior payments. Many self-employed owners do need estimated payments, but the amount should be calculated from their individual circumstances.

Who may need to file an FBAR?

A U.S. person generally must file an FBAR when the aggregate value of foreign financial accounts over which the person has a financial interest or signature authority exceeded $10,000 at any time during the calendar year. Exceptions and separate foreign-asset reporting rules may apply.

Can you prepare returns for clients outside your local area?

Yes. We work remotely with clients nationwide and abroad. State, residency, business-activity, and international-reporting requirements are reviewed based on the client’s facts.

When should tax planning begin?

Planning is most useful before a major transaction and well before year-end. Business formation, property sales, compensation changes, retirement contributions, and international moves should be discussed before documents are signed or deadlines pass.
